Tubes, hoses, and pipes made of 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoropolymers are used where the handling of aggressive liquid or gaseous media in a hostile environment, often under elevated temperatures, is the challenge to meet. Typical applications include the chemical processing segment, the automotive segment, or power generation.

Heat Exchanger

The flue gas desulfurisation plants of fossil fuel power plants and waste incineration plants include heat exchanger systems for cooling and re-heating flue gas below the acid dew point to additionally increase the efficiency of the power plant. The handling of highly corrosive flue gases like humid SO2, SO3, HCl and HF needs to be addressed by adequate material selection for the heat exchanger tubes. Since the mid-1980s, PFA has been successfully used for tubes of heat exchanger systems operating at or below dew point in fossil fuel power plants and waste incineration plants.

More intense legal emission reduction requirements and economic drives towards optimizing corrosion protection in the chemical, pharmaceutical and associated industries, combined with a requirement for higher flexibility in use, have triggered a growing requirement for 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroplastic liners in piping systems. Extruded or moulded pipe liners based on 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoroplastics ensure reliable long lasting performance for extremely demanding applications.

High Pressure Pipe

For general industrial requirements, high pressure hydraulic hose solutions based on 3M™ Dyneon™ PTFE are selected for use in material handling equipment and mechanical engineering systems where petroleum-, synthetic- or water based hydraulic fluids are often present. 3M™ Dyneon™ PTFE inner layer hose constructions are used when excellent temperature-, chemical and permeation resistance at elevated pressure levels are required. In addition, the non-stick surface behaviour of 3M™ Dyneon™ PTFE supports the effective use by avoiding sedimentation on the hose surface resulting in long lasting very high flow rates.

Primary Insulation

The success of 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoropolymers in consumer and industrial cable insulation applications is, without doubt, based on their extraordinary capabilities in meeting market requirements. The combination of excellent electrical properties joined with almost universal chemical resistance, thermal stability and fire safety performance has enabled the introduction of 3M™ Dyneon™ Fluoropolymers to many new, demanding fields of applications. Heat trace cables used in immersion heating coils for distillation plant applications as well as in floor heating elements, are a growing market even in family homes.

Corrugated Tube for Lambda Probe

Located in the exhaust pipe of the car, the lambda probe is the key sensor which measures the amount of oxygen in the flue gas. The sensor‘s input is used to control the fuel mixture and adjusts it when necessary. This optimises the fuel consumption and reduces exhaust emission to the environment. The optimum service temperature of the probe is about 300° C.

With future engine conceptions, the space available for exhaust-gas sensors will be getting ever smaller. In addition, the sensors will be subjected to even higher temperatures. Smaller, lighter, more versatile and above all ready for operation in the shortest possible time: these will be the outstanding advantages of our further developments.

To conform to future stringent exhaust-gas regulations, high-quality materials will be required which can withstand higher temperatures also at those points where connections are made.
