GS Caltex switch to better quality 3M material solution for their canopy sign identity in South Korea.

GS Caltex, the South Korean subsidiary of global petroleum giant, Chevron Texaco, needed to seek a new material specification for its long term retail sign identity owing to significant problems of ‘yellowing’ and chemical discolouration caused by exposure to direct sunlight. Working with 3M and their network of local fabricator partners, a higher quality graphic film specification was recommended, trialled and reviewed successfully over a five year period and then rolled out across the national network of 240 service stations in a period of a year.

The trial site chosen at Sung-Bok station was specifically chosen as it possessed a south-facing canopy sign on the service station forecourt, where 3M films would be significantly technically tested and compared to previous competitive materials.

Signage Fabricators working for GS Caltex, had recommended that a flexible sign face material be used instead of rigid acrylic and 3M™ Panagraphics™ Plus was selected. The primary colours of jade green and silver were specially colour-matched by 3M in the USA in durable cast pvc translucent vinyl film series 3630 for optimal colour density, diffusion, consistency and resistance to ultra-violet rays.

The pilot trial site’s signs were regularly assessed and reports conducted specifically after 21 months of exposure and after 39 months of exposure. There had been no evidence of the previous ‘yellowing’ of the material or any chemical discoloration.

Following acceptance by GS Caltex engineers and marketers of this quality evidence, the Fabricators were allowed to commence rebranding all of the site network with proven and warranted 3M Brand solutions.
