Barclays Cycle Hire is a public bicycle sharing scheme that was launched in the summer of 2010 in London with
thousands of rentable bikes and many fixed docking stations and terminal signs available in an area of over 40
square kilometres of the central city. Transport for London (TfL) hope that the system will fully fund its annual
cost of operation within a year. Sponsored by global bank brand, Barclays, with a contribution of £25 million over
five years, a free mobile app called ‘Barclays Bikes’ is also available.
Barclays branding obviously had to be visible and obvious on both the bikes and the docking stations albeit with only a
limited area of space to work with. In addition, the graphics had to be very durable and protected from graffiti, abrasion,
normal wear and tear. Print quality had to be excellent as the graphics would be viewed from close distance.
Following various tests, Tfl and Barclays, working with 3M and graphic specialist Stewart Signs, specified 3M™ Controltac ™
Graphic Film Series 380 with 3M™ Scotchcal™ Protective Laminate Series 639 Clear. Graphics were applied to the rear wheel
covers, the front side frame and a panel in front of the handlebars.
