“Floating Billboards” on voyage from Germany to Canada

The largest marine advertising graphic of its kind in the world gives unparalleled exposure for Vancouver Organizing Committee (Vanoc) and British Columbia (BC) Ferries!

Three new ships being built in German shipyards for B.C. Ferries of Canada, have been turned into floating advertising billboards to promote the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, as they travelled to their new home in Canada.

Each of the ferries were wrapped in large-format Scotchprint ® Graphics from 3M, taken from photographic images of Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes. The surface that was covered with inkjet printed vinyl graphics on both sides of the ship’s hulls, was over 10 metres in height and 152 metres in length. Nearly 7,000 square metres of Scotchprint® Graphics were used for all three vessels.

The Scotchprint® Graphics were produced in Vancouver over a two-week period, then shipped to Germany, where a team of experienced applicators installed them over a period of three weeks.

The first vessel named ‘Coastal Renaissance’, left Flensburg in Germany at the end of October 2007 for a 45-day voyage to British Columbia. It made a promotional stop in London, site of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games and was seen by hundreds of thousands of people as it travelled from Europe, through the Panama Canal and up the Pacific Coast of Mexico and the United States. The other two ships, which were finished in 2008, set sail and joined the B.C. Ferrie’s fleet during the summer.

“The ships will carry the images until after the 2010 Games when they will be re-painted as part of their normal re-fit. The company couldn't afford a sponsorship with ‘Vanoc’ but wanted to promote the Games, so it offered the vessels to ‘Vanoc’ for promotional purposes. I see this as pure marketing. Millions of people will see the images and many will want to ride B.C. Ferries when they come for the Games.”
