 Scotch-Weld™ 9300 B/A FST : Flame Retardant Adhesive For The Aerospace Industry

With 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ 9300 B/A FST two-part structural adhesive, 3M has introduced another innovation to the aerospace industry. The new product closes a gap in the product portfolio offering excellent flame retardant properties coupled with high mechanical strength.

The two-part epoxy adhesive was developed at 3M’s Customer Technical Centre in Neuss, Germany by Dr. Sohaib Elgimiabi, who in the last years has already gained a lot of attention through his developments of edge filling compounds for aircraft construction. The latest result of his intense development work meets the increasingly important requirements of fire safety in aircraft such as flame retardancy and minimized emission of smoke and toxic gases.

The most important benefit of the product is that it does not employ flame retardants containing halogen or antimony. At the same time, it bonds typical materials used in aircraft interiors, such as aluminium, thermoplastics and honeycomb or composite structures.

Scotch-Weld 9300 B/A FST is suitable for manual and automated application and allows flexible curing processes: room temperature curing, or accelerated curing by heat. The chemical and aging resistant two-part adhesive is available in 400 ml cartridges and bulk containers. It has been subjected to extensive testing by leading companies in the aerospace industry, and is already used in series production.
