3M is present many applications in the engine, nacelle and APU structures. Innovative solutions have been developed to solve problems like high temperature resistance, acoustic dampening and impact protection.
Our Aerospace product range offers engineered solutions specially designed for the engine fan case, nacelle air inlet, engine outer bypass ducts and nacelle thrust reverser structures. Today 3M has a full offer of structural solutions consisting of structural film adhesives, low density void filler and thermo-foaming core splice films. In addition, 3M has developed applications of high performance temporary protection to ease and protect the manufactured parts during assembly. These include:
3M have a range of low density core fillers that are specially designed for use in high temperature aerospace applications. The 3M range has excellent water and chemical resistance, while offering 100% solid and low density reinforcement to honeycomb structures. 3M low density void fillers can be used in the following engine applications.
Abradable fantrack fairings (rub-strip)
Honeycomb local core reinforcement
Sandwich panel edge finishing
Complex gap-filling areas filling
Also available are core splice films designed for splice gap-filling operations between honeycombs in sandwich structures. The well known industry reference of AF3024 is a superior and versatile thermo-foaming film known for its homogenous foaming combined with elevated mechanical resistance
3M propose both low density potting compounds and thermo-foaming core splice films as solutions for edge filling, finishing and close out of panels in engine environment structures. The recently developed thermo-foaming structural film AF 3090 TEF is worth mentioned as it features unique impact resistance and flexible properties which enable superior sandwich panel edges capable of resisting impact damages both during manufacturing, assembly and in-service use.
The wide range of structural adhesive film and sprayable liquid adhesive are well known and used in the area of engine environment bonding operations. Thanks to the fact that most of our adhesive films can easily be reticulated, fits perfectly to adhesive bonding assembly of sound supressant sandwich panels.
3M also offer a range of structural and sprayable products specifically for metal wire mesh bonding. The liquid adhesive EC3964 used frequently in the market of engine environment manufacturing and EC3984 used mostly for maintenance repair and overhaul operations.
With flexible materials such as textiles or foam, 3M’s range of Scotchmate™ Hook and Loop products are ideal. This hook and loop range can be supplied with adhesive or plain backing and provide a simple solution for reducing production time and cost.
3M has developed polyurethane protective tapes designed for long term high performance temporary protection.
These type of products will provide excellent resistance to impact, scratch and other type of damage combined with easy removal process with minimum risk of adhesive residues on the surface.
Today 3M offer these products to ensure healthy aircraft parts during the full assembly chain. The product references 8522 and 8547 will help you to decrease expensive panel and part defects.
