Erosion and Impact Protection in Aircraft

3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes provide outstanding surface protection when applied over the aircraft leading edges, 3M tapes provide an excellent barrier to fluid, foreign Object Damage (FOD) and abrasion damage. This can Significantly reduce maintenance, repair and overhaul costs and extend service life.

3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes provide outstanding surface protection to help prevent damage caused by fluids, FOD impact, abrasion and erosion from most airborne particles.

3M polyurethane protective tapes are made from a highly durable UV light stabilised highly elastic thermoplastic coated with a unique high performance pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive system.

This family of tape products are formulated to resist degradation from ultra violet light and most aerospace fluids, the conditions present in most aerospace applications. These materials have an extensive history of proven usage in military, commercial, business, and civilian aerospace applications.

Fast, safe and easy application, 3M tapes have strength and body, which allows them to be easily handled without tearing, and do not contain hazardous chemicals. Application is achieved by removing a protective liner from the adhesive side of the tape and applying the tape directly onto the clean surface. Military and commercial manufacturers in both aircraft and helicopter segments have been able to solve performance problems observed by replacing alternative materials and techniques previously used including vinyl tapes, polyester films and other sealing materials with 3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes.

3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tapes with the reference number 8671, 8672 and 8681 help protect the leading edges of helicopter rotor-blades, aircraft wings, struts, horizontal and vertical stabilisers from rain, insects, sand, snow, sleet, and most other airborne particle damage.

3M™ Polyurethane Protective Boots 8667HS are preformed shapes of the Polyurethane Protective material providing the same tough durable protection to areas of the aircraft with complex curvatures. They are available in a wide range of specific aerospace applications such as radomes wing and stabiliser tips, landing gear pods and air-inlet structures.

3M™ Polyurethane Protective Tape 8641 has been widely used to help protect the belly fairing, fuselage, antennas, wing flaps and other Structures from gravel, dirt and rock damage.

3M 8641 Tape couples a highly elastic polyurethane outer film to a visco-elastic foam adhesive to help absorb possible impact damage. This solution helps our customers to diminish drastically expensive maintenance and repair operations of both metallic and composites aero-structures.
