Stadtler Bussnang, the Swiss transport company, have invested in a new environmental graphics project for the interiors of over 700 on board toilets on their SBB Dosto IC2000 and ICN railway carriage fleets. The total number of toilets on their fleet is 3,549. Recognising that their travelling customers comfort is a significant part of the overall brand experience, a broad project was started in 2011 to focus on how a improved travel experience could be achieved. The toilet project considered many aspects, from hygiene and equipment reliability to visual aesthetics. With over 4 milion toilet flushes per month, the use of facilities is in no doubt.
Having reviewed how to reduce equipment defects and time taken to fix toilets with problems, the client team added fragrance dispensers to neutralize unpleasant odors, and put in place a system to clean the toilets daily and check them several times daily. In addition, a series of four graphic artwork designs were selected to decorate the toilet interiors.
Working with 3M Commercial Graphics in Zurich, the four designs – panorama's of a forest, mountains, blue sky and a series of light blue tiled design effect - were chosen for wrapping the interior walls, cubicles and units inside the toilets. The solution called for the use of a high quality film material that could be digitally printed to a very high artwork resolution as the viewing distance of the graphics would be very close. The materials would also need to be extremely durable and abrasion-resistant to avoid any damage from vandals. Application and installation would also be critical as the space inside the toilets was quite confined, and the downtime for having the toilet closed from use and the carriage static was a cost factor.
Considering all of these factors with the client, 3M proposed the use of 3M™ Controltac™ 180Cv3-10 white cast pvc film with exceptional conformability, durability and ease of application, printed with compatible HP Latex inks. To cope with the wear and possible damage issue, 3M™ Scotchgard™ Surface protection film with matte finish ref. 8995 was used as a protective over laminate. Furthermore, 3M arranged to train the applicator teams that Stadtler Bussnang wanted to use on the project and supervised the processing of the graphics through a technically approved graphic converter.
Overall, Stadtler Bussnang were happy to award the specification to 3M owing to the excellent commercial and technical care given on the project.
