A Thread of Ingenuity

How discarded thread positively impacts a community's economy and environment.

HOLISTICALLY SUSTAINABLE

These are discarded threads from the garment industry in India that once filled landfills. Now, handloom weavers transform the threads into floor-cleaning cloths, creating much-needed jobs for local residents.

“In our culture, clean floors are a source of great pride. It’s a reflection of the homemaker herself.”

CREATING A BETTER CLOTH

3M researchers all grew up in India, and they wanted to visit families in their homes, including this one here, to learn more. They returned to the lab and together created a new kind of cloth with a unique scrubbing corner for tough stains. It was a first for India and a first for 3M. While the company generates 3,000 patents a year, this is 3M’s first patent in India.

"A lot of people prefer cleaning with a pochcha since the clean that you get with it can't be compared to anything else. Even at my home and for a lot of people I know, it is the preferred cleaning option."

IMPROVING LIVES

3M also works with a nonprofit, which has created 250 jobs for people in rural India. Producing the cloths locally reduces costs and transportation emissions.

“At 3M India, we are so proud to have created something affordable and sustainable that is improving lives in our rural communities.”
